La Condamine
The district :
One of the four main districts of the Principality of Monaco, La Condamine is the second oldest district after Monaco-Ville. It is characterised by its buildings and villas dating from the early 20th century, representing Art Nouveau with beautiful influences from the period in their architecture.
La Condamine was one of the Principality's three communes when it was established by the Monegasque constitution of 1911.
Down this street you can admire Port Hercule, originally a natural bay, and its boats, as well as the huge open space that hosts world-famous events such as the Monaco Yacht Show, Monte-Carlo International Jumping, Monaco Art en Ciel (International Pyromelodic Fireworks Competition), the Foire de Monaco and the Christmas Village in winter.
You'll also find the Rainier III water sports stadium with its heated seawater pool.
Port Hercule :
At the heart of the La Condamine district lies Monaco's port: Port Hercule. As well as being one of the most recognisable ports on the Côte d'Azur, Port Hercule has a long history.
The port has played a significant role in the Principality's history, both ancient and modern.
Covering some 16 hectares, Port Hercule, part of the La Condamine area, can accommodate up to 700 ships for mooring. Its name is a tribute to the Greco-Roman mythological divinity, Hercules.
The Greeks and Romans used this port for commercial purposes in the past.
Prince Albert I
He modernised the port in 1910, adding railings to protect it from waves and storms. Then, under the impetus of his son Prince Rainier III in 1970, a colossal project was launched to improve its protection. Today, Port Hercule is an internationally renowned marina, where the world’s most spectacular and expensive yachts drop anchor. Travellers can admire the breathtaking views of the cliffs, the princely palace and the Formula 1 circuit, making Port Hercules a must-see.
The port
Home to many prestigious organisations, such as the Yacht Club and the Automobile Club de Monaco. Visitors can enjoy a wide choice of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops. Service in the area is first-rate, offering authentic local gastronomy (barbajuan, socca, stockfish, la fougasse).
