Monte-Carlo
The district :
Monte-Carlo Le Rocher:
One of the four main districts of the municipality of Monaco is Monaco-Ville, also known as Le Rocher (La Rocca in Italian) or Monaco-Ville (in French Monaco-Ville, in Monegasque Mu negu).
This district lies at the heart of the original fortified core and is thus the historic centre of the state, where the main public buildings are located: the National Council (Monaco's parliament), the Palace of Justice with its courts and prisons, the cathedral and the oceanographic museum.
The History :
The historic centre of the Principality of Monaco is the Quartier du Rocher, or Monaco-Ville.
This ancient quarter, situated on a rocky promontory, is rich in history and heritage.
In the 6th century BC, the Phocaeans from Massalia (now Marseille) founded the colony of Monoïkos on the fortress of Monaco. This colony was associated with Hercules, who was venerated there as Hercules Monoécus.
In 1215, Fulco del Cassello led a group of Ghibellines to build a fortress on the Rock of Monaco, with the aim of turning it into a strategic military position to control the region. To support the garrisons, houses were also built at the base of the Rock.
In the years that followed, Monaco came under Spanish protection and had to pay heavy tribute. However, Louis XII of France confirmed Monaco's independence, paving the way for a stable relationship between the Princes of Monaco and the Kings of France.
In 1612, Honoré II, son of Hercules, was the first to receive the title of ‘Prince of Monaco’. Since then, the Grimaldi dynasty has continued to rule Monaco, preserving its autonomy and forging a unique history that continues to this day.
