Fontvieille

The district :

Built on land reclaimed from the sea, Fontvieille embodies Monaco's modernism and ingenuity. It is home to modern infrastructure, booming industries and opulent residential complexes. International events are held at the Louis II stadium, as well as being home to the famous AS Monaco FC.

History:

Based on a project designed by Italian engineer Gianfranco Gilardini, construction of the district began in 1966.

The district, which borders Cap d'Ail, began to take shape as workers reclaimed land from the sea. For a long time, it was neglected as one of the Principality's ‘industrial zones’, and until recently, many people were unaware of the area's rapid growth.

Today, however, 4,420 people live here, representing 12% of the total population.

Perhaps the most famous aspect of Fontvieille is its harbour, which is attractive for its position and protection from the wind.

The urban heart

Fontvieille was built on the sea in the 1980s and is located on the Mediterranean coast. With a collection of modern residential developments interspersed with green spaces and parks, the area is home to numerous businesses, offices, retail outlets and the iconic Stade Louis II. Situated in a quiet environment, surrounded by the famous marina, the area offers spacious flats, most with sea views, with a soothing atmosphere. All the services surrounding the area create a dynamic setting, making it the perfect place to live with families and children.

By 2027

The current shopping centre in the Fontvieille district is set to undergo massive redevelopment. Monaco Tribune takes a look at this future project for the Principality, including the changes to come, the transformation of Carrefour and the arrival of new retailers. There should be 70 shops in the future shopping centre, compared with 38 today’. Philippe Clerissi, Chairman of the Fontvieille shopping centre, explains the scale of the work planned. For the moment, there is no fixed timetable, but if everything goes according to plan, the work should start with ‘300 new parking spaces in 2023’ and an ‘extension onto the port’.

Louis II Stadium

The Stade Louis II was inaugurated by Prince Rainier III on 25 January 1985. The Stade Louis-II is a 30,000 m2 complex comprising 1,700 parking spaces on four floors, a series of office buildings surrounding the arches of the stadium, and several sports facilities (including the hall where the Roca Team basketball team plays, the Alberto II nautical centre where the Mare Nostrum international competition is held, and the athletics track where the Herculis meeting is held every summer).

Not only does it stand out for its architecture and design, but it never ceases to amaze spectators. What’s more, from early 2022, spectators and fans will be able to take a virtual tour of the Louis-II stadium thanks to AS Monaco and Riplee.

Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival

The best circus artists in the world are honoured at the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival, which takes place in the seaside resort at the end of January. The most deserving artists from around the world receive gold, silver and bronze medals at the event, which takes place under the big top at Espace Fontvieille. Rainier III of Monaco founded the organisation in 1974, and Stéphanie of Monaco has been its president since 2006.
